The Frontera August 2018 Update

Now that the weather has cooled down a bit, we’ve been out and about at public events around town. And our volunteers have really been of help! So please stop by and say a great big “Hi” to all those wonderful folks. Frontera is gearing up for El Paso Giving Day, for several fall hikes and for the annual clean-up at Resler Canyon. We have several upcoming events:

Join the El Paso Audubon Chapter and Frontera for a series of birding events. Both tours will take place during peak fall migration, a great time for birding!

  • First we’ll be on the lookout for birds along Resler Canyon’s two arroyos. We will start on Saturday, September 8, from 8 to 10 a.m. to explore the Canyon’s mid-elevation desert-arroyo habitat. Our tour guide will be Kevin Floyd. We might see Gambel’s quail, roadrunners, Swainson’s hawks, and black-chinned hummingbirds. We will all meet at Cadiz Street for the start of the bird walk. Wear a hat, sunblock, sturdy shoes (as the terrain is rocky) and bring plenty of water. If you own binoculars and a camera, do feel free to bring them. No prior bird watching experience required! Contact Kevin Floyd at for more information and to RSVP. (The maximum group size is 10.)
  • The second tour will take place Saturday, September 15 from 8 to 10 a.m. at Keystone Heritage Park and Wetlands. Kevin Floyd will point out several species of ducks returning from their northern breeding grounds, wading birds, and swallows. We will all meet at Keystone Heritage Park on Doniphan in the parking lot. Please bring a $2 cash donation for admission to Keystone. No prior bird watching experience required. Wear a hat, use sunscreen, and bring plenty of water, binoculars and a camera if you have one available. Contact Kevin Floyd at for more information and to RSVP. (The maximum group size is 10.)

Chihuahuan Fiesta! Many environmental groups will be present with education booths, and guided hikes will also be available. Join us Saturday, September 29, at the Tom Mays Unit of Franklin Mountains State Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free to all.

Clean-up at Resler Canyon, October 6, 2018 from 8 to 10 a.m. We will meet at the Cadiz Street entrance. If you can help out that would be great! Please let me know if you have any questions:
