After some much-needed snow, it’s hard to believe we’re already headed into March!
This month we have been reaching out to city, county, state and federal representatives to share who we are, and what we do in the region. It was great meeting with City Representatives Annello, Molinar, Svarzbein, and Lizarraga as well as with El Paso County Commissioners Holguin and Stout, along with State Representative Ortega. We had some great conversations and hikes on our desert lands.
The time to give a gift is in March! Be on the lookout for our annual spring letter from Frontera Board President Tina Crosby. Frontera is impacting more people every day, so please consider a monetary gift of support. Your gift, no matter what its size, will help Frontera continue its work of impacting lives and conserving lands. See below if you wish to support Frontera’s work.
And now for more good news. Conservation easements protecting both Knapp Land and Lost Dog are still in the works, and will be brought before City Council for approval very soon.

for the Castner Range Campaign is back!
Since the morning of Jan. 20, 2017 when Castner Range had still not been declared a national monument despite our highly-successful campaign (over 35,000 individual letters to President Obama among two dozen other achievements), Frontera and others have been continuously working in the background to keep the Castner project active. But now we’re back in the foreground with a new campaign to make the Range a national monument. Your renewed dedication to this effort is critical, and we’ll be calling on your “voice for support” one more time!
We’re also proud to announce that the Charlie Wakeem/Teschner Nature Preserve is highlighted on the Texan by Nature website. You can check it out below: Wakeem | Teschner Nature Preserve – Texan By Nature
Frontera Outreach included our first bilingual hike of the year! Our program manager Maryflor García and our long-time board member Scott Cutler led a group of people through the Wakeem/Teschner Nature Preserve. They learned all about erosion, the importance of staying on trails, y como la raíz de la Palmilla se usaba como jabón! (‘and how the root of the soaptree yucca was used as soap’)

For the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Frontera and the El Paso 500 Women Scientists organization hosted a virtual presentation with local women scientists! The speakers, Amanda Labrado, Anna Piña, Briana Piñales, Daniela Aguirre, Jennifer Holguin, and Katalina Salas, shared inspiring stories of their journeys in the fields of STEM. At the end of the month, volunteers helped us improve the trail at the Wakeem/Teschner Nature Preserve. With their hard work, our trails are looking even better now!

World Wildlife Day; Burrowing Owls in the West Texas Region
Celebrate World Wildlife Day with Frontera Land Alliance and the Texas Parks and Wildlife! Lois Balin, Urban Wildlife Biologist from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, will be giving a talk on the importance of burrowing owls in our region.

Join us on a hike through Thunder Canyon, a 26-acre natural arroyo in the western slopes of the Franklin Mountains! Enjoy the start of springtime outdoors! Make sure to bring water, sturdy shoes, and sun protection. Limited to 10 participants, and masks are required.
