The Frontera Land Alliance
May 2018 Update

The Conservation Lands Foundation, at the Friends Rendezvous this year at Scottsdale, Arizona, May 18-20, 2018, recognized Frontera as the 2018 Friends Groups of the Year!! Frontera was honored to be awarded this national recognition. To learn more go to Conservation Lands Foundation.

Throughout the week of May 14-18, 250 members of Coronado High School’s Freshmen class had the opportunity to visit the City of El Paso’s Archeology Museum, learn to read a map, tour the museum’s native desert garden and explore a mile-long natural trail that is part of Castner Range. Big thanks to all the teachers who felt it was worth the effort to get the kids on site to really learn about the land. And thanks as well to our many volunteers, to the One Grub Community, the Franklin Mountains Wilderness Coalition, the Conservation Lands Foundation (and, of course, to Frontera itself) for making this happen! It always amazes me that at most 30 of the 250 kids had ever hiked or even visited the Franklin Mountains. We need to change that, to help the students discover that being outside in nature enables them to relax, do a better job of focusing on their schoolwork and, in general, be mentally and physically healthier.

Great ribbon-cutting event at Resler Canyon’s Wakeem/Teschner Nature Preserve. What a wonderful way for Frontera to kick off the summer months by showcasing our new education trail. If you missed the May 16th tour, please do not worry, as we’ll be hosting more this fall.

The City of El Paso has made Frontera a partner. Check it out here!

Connection to Diverse Communities. On Wednesday, June 6, Frontera will be hosting a webinar by the Land Trust Alliance. Please RSVP to Janae@FronteraLandAlliance.Org  We will listen in at the Frontera office, 1201 N. Mesa Street, Suite D-3 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. And do feel free to bring your lunch! The webinar will focus on connecting people to the land, this connection is one of the best ways that land trusts show their relevance and, therefore, ensure conserved land stays conserved. Plus it’s just the right thing to do! Join Audrey Peterman, nationally-recognized president and co-founder of Earthwise Productions, Inc., an environmental consulting and publishing firm focused on connecting the public lands system as she discusses how diverse communities experience the outdoors and how your organization can be a positive, welcoming facilitator to connect more people to the land. With an emphasis on real-world examples, this webinar will highlight lessons learned from organizations that have successfully worked to connect diverse communities to the land.

Latino Conservation Week Celebration!  Come on out and celebrate Latino Conservation Week with Frontera volunteers Elizabeth Demoultrie, Brenda Berumen and Benny Pol. Take an hour-long hike through Knapp Canyon on El Paso’s Northeast Side Saturday, July 21 starting 8 a.m. Explore nature through a lens and ask questions along the way about the surrounding wildlife and flowers. The hike is very easy, but the trail may have uneven footing. Meet at the corner of Mountain View and Zircon. (MAP)
